Understanding Fats - A Prelude to Understanding Omega 3, 6 and 9

KINDS  of  FATS
(the Truth About Cancer / Facts About Cancer)

Like carbohydrates, the purpose and the importance of fat in the human body is greatly misunderstood.  (totalhealthdynamics.com)
Fat is where most of the energy in your body is stored urpose and the importance of fat in the human body is greatly misunderstood.
Most people have at least a month's supply of energy stashed away in the form of stored body fat. Besides supplying energy, fat cushions and protects your organs and helps regulate your body temperature.

Cholesterol, which is a fat derivative, is so important to ones health and well-being that the body makes its own just to insure we have what we need when we need it, regardless of our dietary intake.

If someone magically removed all the cholesterol from your body, you would melt into a puddle like the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz.

About 95% of fat in the body is in the form of triglycerides which are classified as simple fats.  They are the main form of fat in our bodies and in our diets. They provide us with energy, insulation, and protect our internal organs from damage. They also enable our bodies to metabolize proteins and carbohydrates more efficiently.  Despite the many benefits triglycerides have, too much in our blood circulation can cause major health problems, such as heart disease.

Triglycerides come in 2 varieties, SATURATED fatty acids, which are solid at room temperature, and UNSATURATED fatty acids, which are liquid at room temperature.

Saturated Fats   (the Truth About Cancer / Facts About Cancer)

These are considered the most detrimental to your health.   They usually are solid at room temperature and are derived from animal products.   Saturated fats come from animal sources including meat, egg yolks, dairy products, and fish.  They are also found in tropical oils, especially coconut and palm oil.

Unsaturated Fats   (the Truth About Cancer / Facts About Cancer)
These are considered the essential ones.  And they come primarily from plant and seed sources including safflower, sunflower, pumpkin, sesame, and flax.

Unsaturated fats come in 3 varieties; super-unsaturated, poly-unsaturated or mono-unsaturated. The difference between these 3 is the ease with which they break down inside your body.

Omega 3 essential fatty acids are superunsaturated; they are easily broken down in your body and then used in numerous, vital health building processes.
The Omega 6 essential fatty acids are polyunsaturated acids and they too are easily broken down and used throughout your body.

Monounsaturated fats, the Omega 9s.     are found in olive, almond, avocado, peanut, pecan, cashew, filbert, and macadamia oils, and to some extent in butter and meat, and are also easily broken down.

Omega 3 and 6 CANNOT BE manufactured by our bodies and we must consume them in our diets.  Omega 9 fatty acids are not essential.  Our bodies need omega 9 fats, but we can manufacture them from other sources.

Another form of fat, Compound Fat, is the result of simple fats combining with other chemicals.
The 2 MAIN Compound Fats in the body are the Phospholipids and the Lipoproteins.

Phospholipids are a key component of cell membrane structure; without phospholipids human life would not exist.

The most well-known compound fat is the Lipoprotein, which comes in several different densities, the two most famous being LDL (considered the “bad cholesterol”) and HDL (considered the “good cholesterol”).

Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) transports cholesterol and nutrients from your liver through the blood system and into your cells for use.
High Density Lipoproteins (HDL) transport cholesterol away from your tissues and back to your liver where it is recycled or eliminated.
Both functions, transporting cholesterol and nutrients to the cells and transporting cholesterol out of the cells, are essential to maintaining good health.
